Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Kalyan, the premier institution of higher learning, affiliated to the University of Mumbai, is a multi-faculty institution of higher education with an enrolment of more than 8,500 students. It draws its name from the house of Birlas. The College was established in 1972, by Kalyan Citizens’ Education Society with the blessings of Syt. B. K. Birla ji and Late Smt. Sarla ji Birla. The College enjoys exclusivity among the affiliated Colleges of the University of Mumbai.
Birla College offers Under Graduate Programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce and Post Graduate Programmes in Botany, Biotechnology, Bioanalytical Sciences, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Technology, Physics, Microbiology, Zoology, Hindi, Marathi, History, Political Science, Commerce, E-Commerce and Business Economics and Ph. D. in Botany, Biotechnology, Physics, Microbiology, Chemistry-Nanotechnology, Zoology, Hindi, History and Economics. The College also conducts 3-year B. Sc (IT), B. Sc (Biotechnology), B.M.S., B. Com. (A&F), B. Com. (B&I), B.Com (FM), B.M.M, PG Diploma in Bio-nanotechnology and 18-month PGDMLT programme. The College has taken initiatives to introduce several need-based inter-disciplinary career oriented ‘Add-on’ courses. The College is a study centre of YCMOU, Nashik for B.A., B.Com. B.Lib. and I.Sc, B.Sc (MLT) and M.B.A. courses and of IDOL, University of Mumbai for UG and PG courses. The College has started Community College for Diploma in Accounting and Taxation (sanctioned by UGC) from 2015 – 16.
The College, spread over an area of 20 acres of land in the prime location of Kalyan city, is developed as an eco-sensitive campus. It has provided excellent infrastructural facilities for curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities including spacious Library, IT infrastructure, sports facilities, etc.
The College has an active Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Several initiatives have been taken by the College for quality sustenance and enhancement with focus on providing learner centric environment. Quality Circle in every department is encouraged to undertake measures for quality inputs.
Birla College has a vibrant work-culture and a holistic approach to education is encouraged. Vibrancy in teaching – learning process, use of ICT, interactive exercises, projects, assignments, etc in addition to chalk and talk method provide excellent academic environment. The simultaneous development of the students is achieved through various academic, co - curricular and extra-curricular activities. The results have always been much higher than the University results. Few students figure in the University merit lists every year. In extra-curricular activities including NCC, NSS, etc., the performance of students is excellent.
The UGC-sponsored ‘Women’s Studies Centre’ aims at promoting and strengthening studies through teaching, research, dissemination of knowledge and field action projects of inter-disciplinary framework with a feminist perspective.
The College has received a number of accolades. The College was accredited by NAAC with a 5 - Star status in 2002, re-accredited and awarded ‘A’ Grade with CGPA – 3.37 in 2008 and re-accredited (3rd Cycle) and awarded ‘A’ Grade with CGPA – 3.58 in 2014. The UGC has identified Birla College under the scheme “College with Potential for Excellence” (2010). The UGC has also sanctioned Centre for Foreign Languages, Centre for Studies in Epigraphy, Centre for Yoga - Philosophy and Practice under CPE scheme. The College has been awarded the “Best College Award” (in the Urban category) by the University of Mumbai (2009). The College has been awarded ‘IMC - RBNQ Performance Excellence Trophy – 2011’ in Education.
Recently, the College has been bestowed with ‘College of Excellence’ status (2015-2020) by UGC with financial assistance of Rs. 1.60 Crore. The College has been certified with the ISO 9001: 2008. The College has been sanctioned Rs. 1.00 Crore under the FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure) Programme of DST (Department of Science and Technology) to strengthen teaching and research facilities in all Science departments. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi, has sanctioned Star College Scheme to various Departments (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology).
Research is an integral part of teaching. The college emphasizes on promoting research culture. Seventeen of our faculty members are Ph. D. Guides. Several of our faculty members have been awarded Ph. D. Degree / pursuing research. Many are working on major/minor research projects and have published a number of research papers in national and international journals.
The College has signed MoU with many Universities abroad, namely in the USA, Italy and China for faculty exchange, student exchange and collaborative research.
Birla College NCC Units have bagged the Vice Chancellor`s banner for 11 times out of 15 times for being best NCC Units of University of Mumbai. Our cadets participate in Republic Day Camp (RDC), Thal Sainik Camp (TSC) and All India Nausainik Camp (AINSC) almost every year. This year 2 cadets (Army boys) represented NCC Directorate Maharashtra at Republic Day Camp (RDC) 2016 held at New Delhi and 2 Cadets (Army Girl) participated in the cultural (lazim) event.
